The Holocaust

• What moments of their life captivated you?

The first moment that captivated me was when someone knocked at their door and said that Jews were not allowed to have pets and then shot their 2 dogs just because they were Jewish. Another moment that captivated me was getting Irena to the second circus Irena needed a little push to go even though she loved circuses she didn’t want to go because she did not want to be hurt again.

 

• How were you impacted by their story?

I was impacted by their story because even though they were not fully Jewish they still followed the sabbath rules and what their Jewish father taught them. However, when the kids went to school they were still bullied and called all sorts of names for being Jewish even though they were only “half Jewish”. The kids were very very mean to her and used any reason to pick on her. Another part of the story that captivated me was when Irena decided to take a chance and ask Adolf Althoff if she could join the circus. Adolf Althoff knew she was a jew and he knew that he could get in trouble but agreed she could if she went under a different name.

 

• How can their story be used to educate others?

The story can be used to educate others because if you need to hide anyone because they are in danger you should even though it may put you and your family in danger. It is important to protect people at all costs if they would protect you. Put yourself in their position and see how you would feel.

 

I think it is important to remember and educate people on the holocaust because if we don’t there is no guarantee that it will not happen again. educating and remembering people about the holocaust will make people think about what the Jews had to go thru. If people are educated about the holocaust they will know not to commit anti-Semitic acts against Jews.
